How to be a More Productive Writer
Productivity, like writing, is a skill you can learn. To be a productive writer, you must develop certain habits.
Whether setting up a distraction-free environment, creating a writing routine, or using helpful tools and resources, there are many ways to become a productive writer.
In this post, I share some of my favorite productivity hacks. Implementing these productivity tips can take your writing to the next level.
Create a Distraction-Free Writing Environment
The modern world is busy, and it’s easy to get lost in the hustle and bustle of everyday life. A distraction-free environment, therefore, becomes essential for productivity.
Many writers enjoy working in coffee shops, but cafes can be noisy and full of distractions. If you’re the type of writer who can zone out the background noise and conversations, then by all means, find a coffee shop or bookstore you like.
If you get too easily distracted and tempted to people-watch, find a quiet space at home to sit and focus on your writing.
Once you find a quiet workplace, turn off your phone and email.
Turning off your phone and email will eliminate annoying notifications and messages that distract you from writing.
Turning off your phone and email will reduce your stress levels because you are more mindful of the present moment instead of worrying about that email that popped into your inbox.
Get Into a Writing Routine
Creating a writing routine is one of the best things you can do for productivity.
A writing routine is a series of steps you take before you sit down to write.
To give you an idea, I start my routine with a 15-minute meditation to lower my stress and get centered. Then I do a few stretches to wake up my sleepy muscles, make a light breakfast, and finish my routine by playing music to get the creative ideas flowing.
Meditation is amazing for improving focus. It helps you relax and clear your mind. Meditating can also help you get into the right mindset and jumpstart your creativity.
Physical activity is another element you can add to your writing routine. Taking a few minutes to stretch or walk can help clear your head and make it easier to focus on your writing.
Listening to music is also great for productivity. Music has the effect of keeping you in the zone and motivated on the task at hand. Find music you enjoy and play it in the background as you write.
Creating a writing routine with meditation, exercise, and music can help you stay focused, motivated, and creative.
Create a Writing Schedule
A writing schedule is the secret sauce to productivity. A schedule keeps you organized and consistently making progress on your writing goals.
To create a successful writing schedule, you need to know your available time and what you want to accomplish.
You want to set realistic goals you can achieve in your available time.
Next, set aside blocks of writing time. Also, schedule regular breaks because caring for yourself physically and mentally is also important. Frequent breaks help you avoid burnout.
Finally, be flexible with your writing schedule and adjust if necessary. You want to keep the writing process fun.
Productivity Tools for Writers
From productivity apps to productivity journals, you have many tools at your disposal.
So, how do you choose the right tools?
I recommend tools that keep you focused and efficient.
A timer like the Ticktime Pomodoro timer is a great way to stay focused during your scheduled writing blocks. It also reminds you to take breaks. You set the timer for 25 minutes, then write until time is up. You set another timer for your break and repeat the process until you are done for the day.
One of the most popular productivity apps for writers is Evernote. This app allows you to store notes, ideas and outlines in one convenient location. You can also set up reminders so you don’t forget important tasks.
Another great app is Trello, which organizes projects into boards, allowing you to see the big picture of your projects and tasks more efficiently.
Asana is a project and task manager like Trello, but you can see your tasks in lists in addition to boards.
Also, consider using writing software as you draft. To learn more about how software can help you write more efficiently, you can check out 9 of the Best Programs for Writing a Novel.
Using the right tools and resources is key to becoming a more productive writer.
Increase Your Productivity by Tracking your Progress
Tracking your progress goes hand in hand with making the writing process more productive.
There are several ways to track your progress as a writer. One way is to use a journal to record your writing, thoughts, and reflections. You can use tools such as calendars, spreadsheets, and progress logs to keep track of the number of words, scenes, or chapters written.
Another way is using software to track your writing, such as an app. Many writing programs have built-in tracking capabilities. When you use software to track your progress, you can ensure you’re on track to meet your goals.
Tracking your progress can help you stay motivated and give you a sense of accomplishment as you achieve your goals.
Set Milestones and Goals
If you want to be a more productive writer, setting writing goals is non-negotiable!
It can be less overwhelming to write when you have a plan. Setting writing goals will help you stay focused and organized. Here are some tips for setting writing goals to increase productivity.
Start by setting a yearly goal, such as “I will write a 99,000-word first draft by December.”
Next, break down your goal into smaller, monthly, weekly, and daily goals. This will help make the goal measurable and manageable.
For example, if you want to write a first draft by December, you can break it down into sections or chapters and then figure out how many chapters you must write each month to meet your goal.
You can also break your yearly goal into word count and decide how many words you must write each month, week, and day to meet your goal.
Also, set deadlines for yourself. Deadlines help you stay focused. They can also be great motivators pushing you to make progress.
You’ll notice that the example goal has a deadline of December. This helps break the goal down into smaller steps that you can track.
Finally, make sure to reward yourself for reaching your goals. This could be as simple as taking a break or going out for a nice dinner.
Rewarding yourself for reaching your writing goals will help keep the process fun. To learn more about setting effective goals, check out “How to Achieve Your Life Goal to Write a Book.”
Take Regular Breaks
Taking regular breaks is so important for staying productive. Writing for long periods without breaks can lead to fatigue, frustration, and writer’s block.
When you take breaks, your body and mind get the rest they need to stay creative. Taking a break allows you to return to your writing with a fresh perspective and renewed energy.
Taking regular breaks helps to prevent burnout. Writing can be draining, and frequent breaks can help you stay energized and motivated. You can use these breaks to take a walk, meditate, or even just take a few minutes to stretch your body.
Another benefit of regular breaks is that they help change up the routine of writing. Writing can be tedious, and taking a break can help keep the process manageable and enjoyable.
Conclusion
Certain practices and habits will help make you a more productive writer. Implementing these tips and techniques can take your writing to the next level.
Increasing your writing productivity starts with creating a distraction-free environment. This means avoiding external noise, such as conversations or other sounds that can cause you to lose focus.
Setting up a writing schedule and routine also helps. When you combine a routine and schedule, you can ensure your writing is a consistent part of your daily schedule.
